March Winter CSA
We are springing into action!
March 20 is the Vernal, or Spring, Equinox.
March 9 is Spring Forward day.
Over the course of March we add roughly 90 minutes of daylight to the day. Astronomical, literally 🙂
All of this means the farm practically jumpstarts over the course of the month.
As March progresses, we really get the ball rolling for the rest of the season. In February we started all our alliums and the first rounds of greens. In March we start all our fruiting plants: tomatoes, tomatillos, and peppers and continue starting successions of greens like lettuce heads and Asian Greens, for the hoops, the 25-acre, and the 2-acre. Finally, we start our first cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, and zucchini plants.
At the start of March we will plant the first spring crops in the Hoops and by the end of March we will have planted our first summer crops in the 2-acre. March is really a time of beginning and moving forward and into the arc of the farming season.
Incidentally, the equinoxes are the only time of the year that the sun rises due east and due west, making it roughly equal parts daylight and dark. This is such a special moment on the farm. Because of the placement of the farm between Smith Rock and the ridge behind us, we watch the sun travel laterally all year. The Vernal Equinox marks the exact moment where the sun’s journey begins again. Sunrise and Sunset that day (or a day near to it if it is cloudy) are great days to pause and acknowledge this moment of alignment and changing of season..
Halfway to the longest day of the year and halfway past the shortest. Happy Spring everyone!
