Try this basic braised beef recipe and turn it into anything! Try shredded beef enchiladas, add some shredded beef to your pasta dishes, fill a pie crust with beef, veggies, and cheese, boom, meat pie. The possibilities are endless.
Ingredients
-
1-2 packs of beef stew meat
-
Salt & black pepper
-
1–2 tbsp oil
-
1 onion, roughly chopped
-
3–4 cloves garlic, smashed (optional but recommended)
-
2–3 cups liquid (beef broth, water, or a mix)
That’s it. No fancy herbs, no wine required. Add anything else you want to make it for your meal.
-
Season the beef generously with salt and pepper.
-
Heat oil in a heavy pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat.
-
Brown the beef well on all sides (this is the only “important” step).
-
Toss in onion (and garlic). Stir for ~1 minute.
-
Add enough liquid to come about ½–⅔ of the way up the meat.
-
Bring to a simmer, cover, and cook:
-
Oven: 300°F for 2-3 hours, or until it falls apart
-
Stovetop: Very low simmer for 2-3 hours
-
Slow cooker: 8 hours on low
-
-
It’s done when it falls apart easily.
