This week, we said goodbye to Allie and Ella!

Allie and Ella are two of our 2025 farm apprentices, and this week their farming season came to an end. I know I can speak for the whole crew when I say, we will miss them SO dearly. There were many tears shed at their last farm lunch! And truthfully, writing this is bringing some tears to my eyes. We lived with them for six months, growing food, growing community, and laughing every step of the way. Now they are headed out onto their next adventure, and the same thought keeps coming to mind for me. They were the type of people who were good at being curious. Curious about farming, people, and new places. They reminded me of what it means to always be learning, about yourself and the world.

It takes a special type of person to be a farmer. The long days, the harsh weather, the physical toll. But what makes it especially hard is knowing that your work can often be undervalued. But farmers still persevere, and they commit their lives to growing food for their communities. Farmers are steadfast, dedicated, intelligent, and creative. But, most importantly, they’re curious. Curious about how things work and how to make things grow. Curious about the conditions of the world, food, and community. Curious about a better way to do things. A better way to be in the world. A better way to grow. A better way to eat. Allie and Ella reminded me every day what it meant to be curious. To be involved in your life, less impressed by it. To be invested in your people. To ask more questions, say yes to more things, and no to other things. To live a life you’re proud of. To be a better friend. Most importantly, they loved this place and these people. Allie and Ella will always be farmers; it’s just who they are! Whether they cultivate crops or community, they’ll always be growing something, I’m sure of it.

I think everyone learned something from each of these two. But really, we just really, really loved having them around. We’ll miss you two! Come back soon, now!
