Oh yes, this is why I love the desert

Happy Equinox, friends.

I’m letting myself settle into the feeling of fall. We’ve seemingly made it through the high heat, smoke-filled days, and now we get to settle into this beautiful weather. 70º and sunny? Let’s do one last river run. 55º and cloudy? Sounds like me and my book have date.

Fall reminds me why exactly I chose to live in the high desert.

I love the temperature swings (although, yes, I do fear the eventual freeze and die-off of the crops).

I love the enormous, open landscape and the way you can see forever. I love our mountains when they get their first dusting of snow.

And I love the strange overlap of it all. We’re saying goodbye to some of summer’s crops — cucumbers and eggplants are on their way out — while somehow we’re just welcoming corn and melons. Fall is arriving, but the farm hasn’t exactly gotten the memo that summer is over.

So, happy fall, friends. I’m glad to be here.

✨ This salmon collar recipe is everything. And we’ve got the collars in the farm store.
