Let’s Chat About Basil…

One of the things that makes Rainshadow special is our dedication to variety. Growing a diverse mix of crops increases biodiversity in our fields, supports beneficial insects, and helps foster healthy soil microbiology.

That diversity also challenges us in the kitchen—usually in a good way…

Today, let’s talk basil. At Rainshadow, we don’t just grow the classic Italian basil we all know and love. While it’s true that basil and tomatoes are one of summer’s great partnerships, there is a whole world of basil beyond pesto and Caprese salads.

To make sure that you all feel set up for success, let’s explore what makes each one unique.

Italian Basil
The most common basil grown in the United States, Italian basil is a broad-leaf sweet basil with subtle notes of black pepper and mint. It is the cornerstone of Mediterranean cooking and is best added near the end of cooking to preserve its vibrant flavor, aroma, and color.

Thai Basil
While less familiar to many Americans, Thai basil is a staple in Southeast Asian cuisine. Like Italian basil, it has a natural sweetness, but its narrower leaves carry a bolder flavor with pronounced peppery notes and a hint of anise, or licorice. Unlike Italian basil, Thai basil holds up well to heat and is often cooked directly into stir-fries, curries, and soups.

Purple Basil
Purple basil may be less common commercially, but it’s one of the most striking herbs in the garden. Its flavor is less sweet than Italian or Thai basil, offering warm notes of black pepper, clove, and baking spices. Best enjoyed fresh, it makes a beautiful garnish, colorful addition to salads, or unexpected ingredient in infused vinegars and beverages.

Tulsi Basil (Holy Basil)
Tulsi occupies a special place in Ayurvedic tradition and has long been used in herbal teas and wellness preparations. Unlike sweet basil varieties, tulsi has a savory, complex flavor with notes of clove, pepper, and warming spices. Many people enjoy it as a tea, though it can also be used fresh in the kitchen. Its distinctive flavor makes it a wonderful addition to herbal blends, infused honey, and summer beverages.
